POP3 downloads the messages to your phone so no internet access is required after download.
Advantages
- Messages flow from the server to your computer, they are not deleted from the server.
- Messages are downloaded in a small amount of time.
- After downloading, no internet connection is required to access messages.
Disadvantages
- Limited when using more than one computer, or a computer and a mobile device, as there is no interaction between devices.
- No back-and-forth interaction with the server.

IMAP communicates with the server to update your email across all devices and internet access is required for the communication.
Advantages
- Messages flow from the server to your computer and mobile devices.
- Allows multiple clients to manage the same mailbox.
- Synchronizes the incoming and outgoing messages on all devices.
